SPCNS follows a child-centered philosophy of early childhood education. Under the guidance of the Director, we provide a diverse curriculum that focuses on your child's needs, abilities and interests. We offer a play-based developmentally appropriate curriculum that includes

Creative art projects
Music and movement
On-site garden
Dramatic play
Tools and toys for small motor development

Science
Cooking
Library
Field trips
Outside yard for large motor development

Through their play, children come to see themselves as explorers, discoverers, problem solvers, and inventors.

We also recognize the norms of our society and the need for certain academic exposure prior to kindergarten. As part of our program, the pre-kindergarten class will have exposure to the letters of the alphabet both upper and lower case; their own first and last name; the numbers 1 - 20; and the Pledge of Allegiance. The younger class will have exposure to shapes and colors with emphasis on first name recognition during the 2nd half of the year.

Program Overview

2-Day Class (Three/Four Year Olds)

At SPCNS, the 3-year old class focuses on developing socialization skills such as appropriate behaviors, problem-solving skills, dealing with peers and adults, etc. You can watch as the student/teacher relationship develops and the parent/child separation becomes increasingly positive.

Your child will learn to function in a classroom environment and the difference between acceptable and unacceptable behavior. This exposure will result in an expanded attention span, empowerment when making choices, and a willingness to face new challenges. Through the use of play the children experience various young child concepts.

8:30	Working parents in their first 2 months of enrollment arrive

9:00	Children arrive - outside play
9:30	Large group and wash up for snack
9:45	Snack Time
10:00	Circle Time/Art (2 groups will rotate)
11:00	Inside Play /Outside Play
11:40	Clean up. Children gather all belongings
11:50	Show & Tell
12:00	Child dismissal
12:10	Working parents dismissal (when all work is done)

3-Day Class (Four/Five Year Olds)

Further development of socialization skills.

Enhancing and additional structuring of school environment functioning and behavior.

More concrete exposure and some practice of various (appropriate) pre-K concepts. This is not to completely "master" all skills, but to build a basis, a familiarity for later "cementing" in kindergarten.

Developmentally appropriate growth for each child, encouraging accomplishments and growth in weaker areas. All activities are done through storytelling, science experiments, puppetry, music & movement, singing, and various play experience.
